A major difference is that most herbicides cannot be used since they consist of synthetic chemicals, some of which are harmful. Organic farms require more manual labor, most of which is from hand weeding crops. Current methods of weed suppression have major drawbacks that can often lead to high costs. The downside of this is that the produce is much more expensive and not widely available in supermarkets. As a solution, an automated weeding hexapod robot capable of autonomously navigating crop rows, detecting and destroying weeds is being designed. This paper focuses on the design and verification of a locomotion system. In order to accomplish this, the robust walking platform is able to move quickly and accurately while running for an extended period of time. The platform can withstand rough weather conditions and heavy loading during operation. The cost is on par with other small to medium-sized farm equipment.
