In 1641, Nantucket Island was deeded by the English to Thomas Mayhew, a merchant in Watertown, Massachusetts, and his son, Thomas. In 1659, Thomas Mayhew, reserving a small part to himself, sold most of his interest to a group of nine investors, consisting of Tristram Coffin, Peter Coffin, Thomas Macy, Christopher Hussey, Richard Swain, Thomas Barnard, Stephen Greenleaf, John Swain and William Pike.
