The international business community is increasingly realising that a culture of corruption is a disincentive to investment and trade. With the development of e-commerce, tracking the place where a corrupt transaction has taken place is more difficult. The Government proposes a reform of the law of corruption itself and two key changes in the jurisdiction of UK courts: UK citizens to be triable in the UK for corruption offences committed abroad; and citizens of any country to be triable here even though the offences did not occur wholly within the UK. The main consideration of the proposals is to clarify and codify the law in line with developments both in this country and internationally.
