With his friends Farouz the Persian and Callicles the naval captain, Dorian tracks Megacles to the northern end of the Black Sea. There he meets Danae, a barbarian priestess. They learn that Megacles and his gang are on a boat going up the Great Northern River (the modern Dnieper) with the intention of establishing an empire to control the lucrative amber trade. Dorian and his friends track Megacles and finally ambush him and his gang at a landing spot along the river. Although Dorian and his friends are greatly outnumbered, Danae’s formidable archery skills quickly even the odds. Dorian is then able to confront Megacles in a dramatic showdown on horseback.
