Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the Massachusetts Medico-Legal Society, Vol. 1: 1878-1888 A perusal of the Massachusetts statute concerning medical examinations and inquests will convince the reader that the operation of the theory of the law will be inefficient if the medical examiner is not properly qualified and thoroughly interested in his share of the responsibility. It is almost unneces sary to observe, also, that the radical change in the system of investigation involved in the new law will inevitably lead to confusion unless the whole body of medical examiners agree in and become conversant with the princi ples upon which this statute is based. In fact, these or similar suggestions occurred to several of the newly-appointed medical examiners very shortly after they had received their commissions; and in response to their invitation a large number of their associates met and organized into a society, whose objects and aims are clearly set forth in the constitution and code of by-laws herewith published.
