Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PHP is a popular scripting language that is used for the development of dynamic websites and web applications. It is known for its ease-of-use, flexibility and performance. Often times, development in plain PHP can become repetitive. As a result, there is a need to use PHP application development frameworks. Frameworks promote code reusability, rapid application development and help build more stable and secure web applications. The availability of PHP application development frameworks is extensive. While several comparative studies of the PHP frameworks have already been published, a study that compares the quantitative and qualitative aspects of the usage of the PHP frameworks in a small to medium scale non-enterprise web application is rarely addressed. This work compares the implementation of a small to medium scale non-enterprise web application using plain PHP and the two popular PHP frameworks, CodeIgniter and CakePHP. This research provides a comparison of feature implementation and a quantitative and qualitative analysis across all three versions of the web application.
