An urgent request from an old friend however sees the minister take on his son John Short as a pupil, against his usual rules. John proves a good pupil and the Reverend has in his sights a place in Cambridge University for him, something that John is enthusiastic about. But matters take an interesting turn when a young widow, Mrs. Coddard comes to live in a cottage nearby...
