Progress in healthcare and education in a rural part of western Zimbabwe is traced and highlighted with reference to Francis Boatwright and his wife Monica. Boatwright was an exceptional Anglican missionary whose range of skills, interests and abilities ranged from construction work to journalism and administration. He provided much-needed leadership and expertise in the development of an educational institution which also included a clinic.
