Book excerpt: This thesis involves the initial phase of development of a virtual-reality based Robotic Surgery Simulator (RoSS) for the da Vinci Surgical System (dVSS) implementing the first two skill tasks to train the users on their psychomotor skills. This simulator is expected to reduce the time and cost involved for training on da Vinci Surgical System. The thesis discusses the development of a console that preserves the kinesthetics of working on the da Vinci console, and development of a software interface with realistic physics, implementing the first two tasks of RoSS, namely the ball drop task and cylinder positioning task, and validation of the same by human subject testing.
