Book excerpt: The necessity arose to plane for a cooling blower in air-cooled radial engines, to protect the engine, especially the heads, from nonpermissibly high temperatures during a test-stand run, while taxiing, and as in a climb with small flight path velocity. Until now, this was not necessary in liquid-cooled engines, since the danger of overheating could be forestalled through sufficiently large coolers, through evaporation possibilities, as well as greater inertia of the entire cooling system.
