Book excerpt: Abstract: Organizational guidelines for a successful program of home food delivery are presented in a manual which helps communities develop or expand Meals on Wheels projects. Meals on Wheels attempts to meet nutritional needs of homebound elderly, handicapped and chronically ill individuals, without requiring that they leave their own environments. Methods of operation, assessment of program needs and costs, and hints for budgeting and management are described. Directives cover personnel, training and recruitment of volunteers, facilities, menu planning, food preparation, packaging and delivery. Eligibility criteria for recipients of meals are discussed. Appendices provide samples of budgets, a client information form, volunteer service certificate, program information sheet, driving route calendar, volunteer instructions, and billing forms.
