Book excerpt: The concentration and distribution of the ions in high-temperature flames enriched with easily ionized additives was determined. Ionization densities up to 10 to the 14th power/cc were measured by Langmuir probes. Other methods of measuring flame ionization, such as double probes and microwave attenuation were employed and corroborated single probe measurements. For these tests, hydrogen flames were burned with both oxygen and nitric oxide. Meas rements of ionization in the H2/O2 flames reached 10 to the 14th power/cc and agreed with theoretical values. Measurements in the H2/NO flame never surpassed 10 to the 13th power/cc and were found to depend critically upon propellant flow rate and burner geometry. A large cold gas boundary layer which exists in the nitric oxide flames forms a thermal barrier to the passage of electrons from the burner into the flame and influences probe measurements. (Author).
