Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Panama Canal is a perennial source of misunderstanding and disagreement between the United States and the Republic of Panama, and indeed between the U.S. and much of Latin America. Since the Panama riots of 1964, the U.S. and Panama have engaged in a seemingly fruitless effort to establish new understandings regarding the canal. At the moment it appears that they are no nearer to cooperation regarding the status and administration of the Canal than they were in 1964, and are probably farther from agreement than they have been at any time since 1903. This essay includes a history on the treaties and background of the Canal, the political problems, its economic significance and its strategic military importance. It is this author's opinion that United States presence in the Canal Zone is most important and that we cannot relinquish control of this area.
