Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1978, The Making of Urban Scotland traces the evolution of towns from their prehistoric origins to the present day. Most of the material is based on research in Scotland’s archives, housed in the Scottish Record Office. Special emphasis is placed on the causes of economic change and its repercussions upon Scottish town life. The urban stresses of the nineteenth century are analysed in detail, as well as the subsequent emergence of Scotland as Western Europe’s pre-eminent council house society. The unique character of Scotland’s housing occupies two chapters and for the first time the whole panoply of the statuary origins of the council house landscape is exposed.
