Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new translation of the Tsutsumi Chu-nagon Monogatari. Nine of these ten short stories were written in the 11th and 12th centuries, presumably by women of Japan's court aristocracy. Like Lady Murasaki's The Tale of Genji, which predates them, several short narratives pursue romantic entanglements of Heian courtiers. But unlike Murasaki's classic, some of the stories satirize male characters cast in the Genji mold, and others ridicule social convention.
