Book excerpt: General description of the collection: The Theodore S. Laine collection contains letters written by Laine to his wife, Nellie, fron 21 June 1944 to 8 August 1945. In his letters, Laine describes military training and life, food, mail delivery, his duties in an Army Band, and his difficulty in procuring instruments and musical arrangements. He describes his alcohol and marijuana use, the punishment for being drunk on duty, his concerns for his wife's health, his frustration with the Army and his difficulties "fitting in." Laine also describes a Memorial Day 1945 tour of Mauthausen Concentration Camp, and the impact of the use of the 1st Atomic Bomb on the troops stationed in Europe. The collection contains two letters to Mrs. Theodore Laine, one dated December 1942, the other dated 29 July 1944 from her brother Lennie Silva. One undated letter from Mrs. Laine to her husband is included in the collection, as are a letter to Laine from a war buddy dated 1 May 1946, and a 1965 letter from Laine's Congressman, Philip J. Philbin, concerning the Rutland Heights VA Hospital in Massachusetts. A World War II era photograph of Laine completes the collection.
