Book excerpt: Excerpt from Winter Wheat and Sorghum Production in the Southern Great Plains Under Limited Rainfall The crop failures and the spectacular dust storms that have ravaged the Great Plains during the last few years have focused public atten tion on the region and have aroused much speculation regarding its future for farming. This attention has been directed most closely to that portion consisting of southwestern Kansas, western Oklahoma, southeastern Colorado, and part of the Texas Panhandle. It 1s here that some of the worst soil blowing has taken place. Hasty judgment has led to condemnation of the whole area for crop production by some people, and its _no less vigorous support by others. No intensive effort has been made to get at the facts and to determine from past experience what 1s likely to happen m the future. To understand better the present status of agriculture in this area it is necessary to have some knowledge of the changes that have taken place since its settlement.
