Louisa shares with readers what it's like growing up with a deaf daddy, and she teaches readers about loving and living with a person who experiences the world differently than you. The title, A Sense of Love, refers to how love is experienced variously through the five senses. Louisa's story demonstrates that the absence of one of the senses does not impede a person's abilities, nor the love between a parent and child. Rather, love is experienced by engaging in the remaining senses in unique ways. The story is told in an ABCB rhyming structure, and is accompanied by illustrations which demonstrate an engagement of the particular sense (sight, touch, taste, smell) described in that part of the story. Many of the illustrations include clear depictions of the characters using American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate.
