Book excerpt: This report uses information from northern food consumption surveys and a Quebec Inuit health survey to develop a revised northern food basket, which allows comparisons to be made of the cost and affordability of an identical and culturally appropriate store-bought nutritious diet for families living in isolated northern communities in different regions. Regional Inuit food baskets are also developed for Labrador, the Eastern Arctic, and northern Quebec, which allow separate calculation of the cost of store food and country food. The report includes information on the concepts of food basket design, the method used to design and calculate the northern food basket, the content of the revised basket, the nutritional analysis of the basket, and the weight and costs of the baskets.
