His parents were Walter Elwood Boyer (1890-1963) and Verna Frances Grossnickle (1891-1981). He married Carol Constance Younker, daughter of Franklin Tully Younker (1896-1973) and Edna Mae Burrows (1895-1981), 27 August 1946. They have three children. Ancestors, descendants and relatives lived mainly in Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Switzerland and Germany.
