Book excerpt: This 2019 research followed up a study for pastoral transition that focused on the urban African-American church and built upon the baseline research of Sims (1999) entitled: Towards Effective Pastoral Transition in the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World (PAW). This study has documented the real-world steps taken for three different successful pastoral transitions. The primary research question is "how do pastoral transitions in African-American churches comprised of 200-400 members in Indiana compare with what was identified by Sims' study (1999)?" This study employed a two-phase sequential mixed methodology to ascertain the status of pastoral transition and succession plans of urban African American senior pastors. In the first phase, a survey quantitatively researched the change in the number of senior pastors who took action to develop pastoral succession plans and/or have pastoral succession in place 20 years after the initial study. In the second phase, three churches were investigated qualitatively through interviews, and observations for significant factors for successful pastoral succession including preparedness for succession success; pastoral life after succession; and financial resources needed for succession. These variables were evaluated from two organizational perspectives including the former pastor and the new pastor. Findings reported the number of transition plans currently in place within the targeted population of African-American churches and recommendations have been documented for an enhanced pastoral transition handbook.
