It was organized for six months State service from 1 August 1863. It was composed of companies formed from various regiments of the South Carolina Militia. It did not go into active service until September 4-5, 1863. The 2nd Regiment served until February 2, 1864. Many of the men probably served throughout the remainder of the war in advance of Sherman's invasion.
