Full coloring of the fruit is also a problem to growers of other major varieties of red apples. Existing pricing practices which place a premium on highly colored fruit may also encourage cultural practices that adversely affect the quality of fruit available to consumers. For example, growers in an effort to obtain better color in their apples and hence higher prices may leave fruit on the tree beyond its optimum maturity. Overmature apples become more susceptible to bruising and are likely to have a shorter shelf life than fruit harvested at proper maturity. Thus bet ter color is gained at the expense of other quality factors, and the over all condition of the fruit when it reaches the consumer may have a bad influence on purchases and demand.
