Book excerpt: "There are few of us still around who remember the Columbia River in its wild and unharnessed time. It was exciting to note its varying and unpredictable moods. Often its spring freshets threatened towns; almost always they flooded the extensive bottom lands that can no longer be seen. And it is hard now to visualize how narrow the river could be at the times of drought in the Columbia watershed. But high water or low, it had a vitality and turbulence we no longer see. The pioneers of these hills and valleys had an energy and perseverance to match their river. So much of this history had gone unrecorded that I set out in the 1990's to put it on paper for my neighbors to enjoy. The resulting potpourri was published in more than 130 columns in The Enterprise that serves the Mount Adams Country." -- Keith McCoy
