Book excerpt: This book is a political, cultural, economic, and historical analysis of the Filipino experience in Hawaii. In the first chapter an historical overview of the Philippines is found. The second chapter reviews the Filipino worker's role in the plantation system in Hawaii and details the immigration patterns of Filipinos to Hawaii from 1907 to 1929. Worker involvement in the labor movement is recounted in chapter three. Chapter four provides an analysis of the socioeconomic status of Filipinos in Hawaii, and chapter five focuses on labor force participation, Filipino women, and ethnicity. Philippine languages in Hawaii are discussed in chapter six. Chapters seven and eight describe various Filipino strategies for survival and their efforts to achieve integration and overcome stereotypes. An epilogue traces the development, culture, and attitudes over the course of three generations. (APM)
