The work of the artillery and engineers, which played such an important part in the siege, could be easily watched; but beyond that, there was no opportunity for a display of grand strategy or the high art of war before the Russian stronghold. Both were limited to the placing of thousands of men in as close proximity as possible to the enemy's works, and at periodical intervals calling upon them to attack.
