EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK The series begins with an introduction to Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), a small-town waitress who has telepathic abilities. Sookie works as a waitress at Merlottes bar, owned by owned by Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell), who we learn is a shapeshifter. Sookies coworkers include Lafayette Reynolds (Nelsan Ellis), the flamboyant short order cook who sidelines as a hustler and drug dealer. Arlene Fowler (Carrie Preston), three time divorcee with two children, also waitresses at Merlottes. Sookies best friend Tara Thornton (Rutina Wesley) rounds out the staff as bartender. While working, Sookie first meets Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), Bon Temps first vampire.
