Leaving their West Tennessee home and family, the Porter boys became members of three separate unitsthe Eleventh Mississippi, the Twenty-Ninth Mississippi, and the First Confederate Cavalry Regiment. In turn, these young men and their comrades saw action in some of the wars most intense battles. Sadly, each of the Porter brothers was killed in the course of the war, and their bodies were hastily placed into unmarked graves. Their plights and sacrifices are carefully recorded through the use of family letters, additional primary sources, and other historical documents.
