Book excerpt: This chapter examines the history of the copyright/design interface in Italy from the first copyright and design Acts of the Italian state to the implementation of the Design Directive in 2001. The country has known two main periods, one of full cumulation and the second of partial cumulation. In this second period, partial cumulation was based mainly on separability (scindibilità). From 2001 onwards, the criterion of artistic value took over that of separability. In the last part, the chapter analyses the successes and failures of this history and draws conclusions as to which period or system worked best, if any.
