Book excerpt: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change mentioned the potential use of debt-for-nature (DFN) swap as one of the financial instruments to mobilise climate finance. Intrigued by this potential, this paper explores the feasibility of DFN swap as a climate finance instrument under the existing climate change regime. This paper aims to answer the main question of 'can DFN swap be classified as a climate finance instrument?'. To answer this question, this paper analyses the interpretation of climate finance provisions under international climate change instruments and finds the existing vagueness of the definition and scope of climate finance. Furthermore, this paper explains the implementation of DFN swap in Indonesia and Seychelles to provide a comprehensive understanding of its operationalisation. To navigate the lack of clear definitive types of financial instruments, the analysis of this paper identified four main elements of climate finance. Finally, in determining whether a DFN swap can be considered a climate finance instrument, the design and use of the DFN swap need to fulfil all of the identified climate finance elements.
