Book excerpt: He has rescued American hostages from southeast Asia, hunted the most dangerous animals in sub-Saharan Africa, uncovered a perilous mob conspiracy, and even recovered top secret tech pivotal to U.S. National Security. Aaron Scott has done it all, well, at least he has in his 12-year-old mind. Tired of being bailed out of trouble by his four older brothers, Aaron is desperate to prove that is he is a whole lot more than just The Fifth of Five. Feeling the timeless curse of being the youngest, shortest, and smallest of five brothers, Aaron only wants one thing, the same thing every younger sibling wants, to be the hero, or maybe just needed, for once. But as he desperately attempts to prove his worth, Aaron inevitably disappears into his outlandish fantasies, where he usually ends up finding himself in a heap of real trouble. But one morning, Aaron's father doesn't return home, and he fears his father's life is suddenly in real jeopardy, due to family ties to the tri-state mafia. Left behind by his brothers again, he springs into action to show he will go to any lengths to save his family. Aaron's journey forces him to learn the value of love and loss in the most important of relationships. The Fifth of Five is middle grade autobiographical fiction, narrated by the youngest of five brothers. This book is written for boys ages 10-17. This 1990's Americana story fosters childhood nostalgia that spans generations.
