Book excerpt: In the past 20 years, the number of immigrants coming to New Zealand has dramatically increased. As such, it is important to help immigrants' transition to their new homeland. Immigrants have chosen to migrate to New Zealand for better education and working opportunities, but overall, a better lifestyle. Unfortunately, successful acculturation is not always possible for these immigrants. Many do face tremendous problems such as discrimination and finding suitable, adequate employment, and this overall hinders them to successfully acculturate into New Zealand. This research examines whether discrimination hinders successful acculturation. Moreover, this research investigates whether Person-Job (P-J) Fit (which constitutes being employed in an area that matches one skills, experiences, attitude and qualifications) mediates the relationship between perceived discrimination and acculturation. A survey was implemented and respondent was questioned about their personal and group discrimination, their employment attitudes and acculturation levels as Chinese immigrants to New Zealand. The results of the research suggest perceived group levels of discrimination directly hinders immigration successes of acculturation. In addition, the research provides further evidence that P-J Fit mediates the relationship between perceived levels of discrimination and acculturation. P-J Fit indicates overall successful transition for immigrants living in New Zealand, and plays a critical role for these immigrants. Strengths, limitations and practical implications of the research are considered along the ideas for future research.
