Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Predictive Value of Certain Tests of Emotional Stability as Applied to College Freshmen Dean Hawkes (22) states that only about twenty or thirty per cent of students who enter state universities remain to gradu ate; and that at Columbia there is a shrinkage of about forty three per cent. Such shrinkage is, of course, due to many causes. Morrison (43) made a survey of the situation in American colleges and universities. He sent a questionnaire to three hundred and forty-two deans in thirty-two state universities, fourteen privately endowed colleges and universities, and eight women's colleges. Opinions concerning the proportion of stu dents having mental difficulties varied considerably - from about two to twenty per cent; but many educators thought there was a need for work in mental hygiene.
