Book excerpt: The development of new synthetic methods lays the fundamental groundwork for drug discovery by providing practical access to biologically active natural products. The Krische group has developed a broad class of metal-catalyzed transfer hydrogenative transformations and used these convergent methods to complete the total syntheses of complex molecules. The focus of my graduate research in the Krische group has been the discovery and optimization of methods for iridium-catalyzed enantioselective construction of C-C and C-N bonds. Additionally, I completed the 10-step total synthesis of splicing modulator pladienolide B, a type I polyketide bearing 10 stereogenic centers, and developed the synthesis of substructures of Neaumycin B. For each of these, iridium- or ruthenium-catalyzed reactions developed in the Krische lab were utilized as key transformations
