Book excerpt: Mack is on his way to a hunting trip with friends near Red Lodge, Montana. Forced to stop overnight in Deer Lodge, Montana by a snow storm, he chances upon a young woman who captivates his imagination for reasons he cannot define. When he finally reaches Red Lodge, Mack and others from the hunting camp have their hunting plans interrupted when they are enlisted in an all-night search for a young man injured in a snowmobile accident. The rescue brings together several members of Mack’s traditionalist hunting party and yuppies from the snowmobiling party. One young hunter falls in love with the injured boy’s girlfriend, best friend of the girl in Deer Lodge. His hunting opportunity lost, Mack heads home. At Deer Lodge, he is drawn into the conflict between the enigmatic girl and her abusive boyfriend. He almost oversteps the boundary set by local law enforcement as he helps them apprehend the boyfriend and his criminal pals in a shootout. Mack is conflicted by guilt for leaving his wife in a delicate situation to go hunting, and by his unexplainable attraction to the girl. Both girls must face the disappointing truth about their boyfriends.
