Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty-First Annual Report of the Health Department of the City of Boston, for the Year 1892 The statistics of mortality, as will be seen in the tables accompanying this report, show an increase in the number of deaths over the number of the previous year. At the com mencement of the year influenza was prevalent, and the deaths from this cause contributed largely to the increase of mortality, so that at the end of January the excess of deaths over those of the same period of the previous year was 296, and at the end of the first three months of the year the deaths were increased by 556, largely due to this cause. The total number of deaths for the year was Esti mating the population of the city at in the middle of the year, the death-rate per one thousand inhabitants is found to be This rate is 90 per thousand over the preceding year, and 50 per thousand over the average of the ten precedin'g years. The deaths from zymotic diseases show also an increase. This was especially the case in the mortality from diphtheria and scarlet fever, while the deaths from typhoid fever and measles showa decrease. The number of cases of diphtheria reported at this office during the year was being 49 more cases than the average of the ten preceding years. The deaths from this cause were 414, being 25 in excess of the average number for the same period. The character of the disease appears to have been more severe than was the case in preceding years, as over 30 per cent. Of the cases reported were fatal.
