Book excerpt: Ever increasing numbers of the United States population speak a primary language other than English in their homes. The literature shows that persons accessing healthcare services who do not speak English proficiently face barriers in receiving equitable high quality patient care. Nurses have an ethical obligation to ensure persons who speak limited English receive the same high level of patient care as those who speak English fluently. Using Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring as a theoretical and contextual framework, nurses can learn how to establish a therapeutic nurse-patient relationship despite a language barrier. Working with interpreters is a necessary nursing skill in caring for persons from diverse cultural backgrounds, and strengthening this skill in nursing practice can enhance the healthcare experiences for persons who do not speak English proficiently. Within a simulated setting, nurses will learn the skills, knowledge, and attitudes needed to work with interpreters to bridge language barriers when working with persons who do not speak English proficiently.
